The October Issue of First Things is out, with poems by Laurance Wieder, Bryce Christensen, Timothy Murphy, and A.M. Juster, together with one the last poems from the writer Thomas M. Disch and a memorial poem for Disch, “From a Line in a Novel,” by David Mason.
And in the Books section, Juster’s new translation of The Satires of Horace, just out from the University of Pennsylvania Press, receives an enthusiastic review from A.E. Stallings.

Just got my copy this morning, and of course I turned to the poems right away. This issue continues the remarkable string of poems that Jody and Paul have been offering us every month.

Jody and Paul worked with me quite closely on my poem for Tom, and I'm grateful for their help.

A poem and a good review--it's like I've died and gone to Heaven, and working with First Things gives me a better shot at the latter!

In addition to all the great poetry, the new issue of First Things also includes a review of a strange new novel by the poetry editor, another Spherean. I can't remember the title, but the author seems like a fine chap, though he does have a tendency to cry wolf.

I didn't mention the notice of the new novel by FT's poetry editor and Eratospherian Paul Lake in that same October issue, 'cause I wanted to get the poetry announced. But if you haven't read the book, you should.

Quite a lineup there. Yet another magazine that I have to get off my butt to subscribe to. Congratulations to all.
