I'm back from my trip to Maryland, and I see you all carried on quite well without me.

My father, who's had Alzheimer's for a number of years, passed away, and I had to be with my family and attend his funeral.

I warned Alex that a number of things would disrupt the early weeks of my moderatorship, There are a few more things ahead, though nothing so dire and bleak as my father's death. So please bear with a bit during these first few weeks. Before too long, I'll get it all together and be a steady presence here.

Thanks, Tim, Alex, Anne, and Catherine for your kind words and thoughts. Even though my Dad has been taken away by stages with Alzheimer's, it still feels abrupt and painful to lose him. Your kind condolences are much appreciated.
