Poetry/Light Verse reading in DC -- Sponsored by Able Muse Press
If you’re in or near DC and could use a laugh, some good news ..
Able Muse Press is sponsoring Poetry and Punchlines, a night of comic verse, on Dec. 5.
Our lineup at the mic includes:
Melissa Balmain (headliner), Brendan Beary, Edmund Conti, Claudia Gary, Mae Scanlan, Ed Shacklee, J.D. Smith, Ryan Wilson and, last but not least, the Washington Post’s beloved Gene Weingarten
Date: Friday, Dec. 5
Time: Doors open at 6pm, reading starts at 7pm
Place: Catholic University of America, Pryzbyla Center, Great Room C
Admission: FREE
Your holiday shopping: is all taken care of, if you go (several authors will have books on hand to sell/sign)
Metro and Parking Tips: CUA is in the Brookland neighborhood of D.C., and the metro stop on campus is called, logically enough, "CUA/Brookland." There will be plenty of parking available on Harewood Road, which runs right along the side of campus, and parking restrictions will be lifted for the event.
The Pryzbyla Center is a modern, spaceship-like building in the middle of campus. It faces Caldwell Hall, where, we’ve been told, some guy named Yeats read in the late 20s.

The Yeats story is true, but it was in 1904, and instead of reading poetry he gave a lecture about the Irish Language:

On the other hand, if one's looking for antecedents, Great Room C is where the Pope spoke when he last visited. So the spirit of Benedict may still be present...

How brilliant! I've always thought light verse poets should have their own stand-up comedy circuit. Hope this will start a trend.

I do it often over here, on my own, but how I wish I could join a line-up like this.
Now if I could only just nip across the Atlantic...
Have a great night, guys and gals!

Terrific venue and an idea whose time has come. Wish I could be present to share the joy.
