Default Melbourne Shakespeare Society's Sonnet Competition: John Whitworth

I appear to have shared this prize with the Australian poet William Cotter and therefore won a number of Australian dollars. I heard about this before Christmas but waited to announce it until I received written confirmation (and the cheque) So far no cheque, but the win has appeared on The Society's website so it appears to be so. Congratulations to me and Mr Cotter and the uncounted dollars that we will in the course of time, receive. You cannot find my poem on the website and I don't want to print it anywhere until I am sure I cannot use it elsewhere. So two cheers to me. It's a jolly good sonnet, though I say it myself.

Congratulations, John - I look forward to reading it one of these days.

How many dollars?

I once spent ten days in Melbourne, and thought it a very pleasant city. Excellent zoo.

How many dollars, Brian? The first prize is 250 dollars and the second 100 dollars. That ought to mean 175 dollars. But they have awarded another second prize which might mean only 125 dollars, unless they have found some more money behind the sofa cushions. At the moment is is no dollars at all, but I wait with hungry beak agape, ever in hopes.

I too have heard that Melbourne is a charming place.

Well done, John. I once met a lass who said 'Melbourne is a lady and Sydney is a whore'. She was from Melbourne and preferred Sydney, as it happens.

Oh, congratulations! I tend to be lazy about sending out, so I am doubly in admiration.
