Default Article by Brooke Clark about Martial

Brooke Clark, whom you may know as the editor of The Asses of Parnassus, has recently posted an article in Partisan about the attractions of the Latin poet Martial, which quotes from my recent poetic translations and the even more recent prose translations of Gideon Nisbet. If you don't know Martial, I warn you that the translations are quite racy in some cases. I will say that I tend to agree with Clark about the things that make reading Martial entertaining.

Interesting and amusing essay! It inspired me to buy your translations.

I frequently go to Who’s Online to discover great reads. This is one, and in the linked issue of Partisan, Susan McLean’s rendering of Martial 3.88 has a whiplash bawdiness that matches the awfully naughty original. Hoo!

One of my own favorites is Martial’s 4.44 on the utter mess made by the eruption of Vesuvius onto Pompeii and Herculanium that can be found in “Of Course,” on Amazon Books under the name “Allen Tice”, my book.
