I'd never checked this board before, but today I took a look, and this particular thread struck my fancy. So I'm three months late. Who cares?

Carter

Up till yesterday,
when Ellie lost her wisdom teeth,
I thought she had one use for me and only one.

But as noon came near I got a call.
"Help!" her mother said.
"Ellie demands you cook for her.
She's in pain, and craving nothing more
than your delicious soup."

I boiled potatoes,
minced the leeks,
fiercely chopped the onions,
dribbled in the cream,
and it was good.

Poor Ellie smiled when I turned up,
pale, though, and wan she was.

Up till yesterday I thought
she only needed me
when things got really tough,
and she could not decide
whether proper usage called
for semicolon, dash,
or just a comma and conjunction, too.

I knew there was a gene
for getting punctuation right.
But leek and Maine potato soup, that
nectar of the gods?
Oh, she's my kin. No doubt.

It takes a pro to pull her teeth,
opium can ease her pain,
but only Grandpa can produce
the sustenance that makes her smile.
