I had been going to reply “not done because they are too menny” but realised that this would be both lazy and a tad arrogant. Then Ed, with his customary generosity, did the basic gruntwork from his own shelf, so I’ve put them in date order and added “Real Newport”. This list dates from my first poetry collection and is preceded by a series of memoirs, based on a regular newspaper column, that are now long out of print. I have but a few copies of the last of these and the arrival of those “remaindered” books gave rise to a poem that appeared in "Between Dryden and Duffy". Thus ars longa, albeit vita brevis.

Over to Tony for cutting and pasting, for which relief, much thanks.

Ann Drysdale

The Turn of the Cucumber (Peterloo Poets, 1995)
Gay Science (Peterloo Poets, 1999)
Backwork (Peterloo Poets, 2002)
Between Dryden and Duffy: Another Collection (Peterloo Poets, 2005)
Real Newport (Seren 2006)
Three-three, two-two, five-six (Cinnamon Press, 2007)
Discussing Wittgenstein (Cinnamon Press, 2009)
Quaintness and Other Offences (Cinnamon Press, 2009)
Turn (Exot Books, 2013)
Miss Jekyll's Gardening Boots (Shoestring Press, 2015)

Also: I want to say a special thank-you to Ed, and, by extension, to the likes of Ed, who buy and read and support other toilers in the field. You know who you are.

Another benefit of the exercise is a reminder that I have yet to urge the bishops to 'Open Ann Drysdale's Box' with its stash of copies for sale, but good to see Real Newport on the list, which I do possess.

This is a guide to an untouristic town like no other, so entertainingly
written it makes a wonderful bedside book, even if Newport has changed a bit in ten years and I've never left the three platform station.

More to the Spherean point, it also contains twenty-five quirky A.D. poems at relevant points in the narrative, a delightful bonus.

Have those bitterns nested yet, Ann?

The list at the top of this thread illustrates very powerfully the fact that Eratosphere is not and never was a site for beginners.

For Timothy Murphy you need to add the following titles:

The Deed of Gift (Story Line Press, 1998)
Set the Ploughshare Deep (Ohio University Press 2000)
Very Far North (Waywiser 2002)

Let's add one more later title to Tim's list:

Mortal Stakes/Faint Thunder (Dakota Institute, 2011)

I don't know if this is to only pertain to poetry, but I think not since Alicia's translation of "De Rerum Natura" is listed.

So my shelves yield also by Ann Drysdale: Pearls Before Swine (Routledge & Kegan Paul); Sow's Ears and Silk Purses (Routledge & Kegan Paul); Faint Heart Never Kissed a Pig (also first at R&KP, but I have the paperback published by Sphere Books Ltd.

And there are numerous books (re Clive's post above) on the craft which are either edited or written by Spherians--for instance John W's "Writing Poetry" and many others (David Mason as essayist, as co-editor of "Western Wind").

I think also of Gregory Dowling's recent "Ascension" and his other books.

For Eratosphere is more than a workshop for poetry,we have boards for fiction and translation as well.

But that might be expanding the documentation project overmuch?

Anyway this was one of the best ideas of 2016--so far!

Thanks again,Tony.

PS I have some seemngly shy poets on my shelves. I may return and out them, if they do not willingly come forward.

It's there, Janice, by its English title: The Nature of Things. But you're right that non-poetry books are being left out; I've been doing that on purpose. Perhaps Tony should tell us what he prefers.

Yes, Maryann. That is what I meant. That since "De Rerum" was listed by Tony, it might be that other categories are also eligible to be included.

I have the book but didn't climb the stairs to check the English title.

Lazy Daisy.

Added afterward. If this sounds querulous, that isn't my frame of mind.

Hi All,

My thought was to include all books, not just books of poems, since those who do translations and anthologies also do important work that probably would be of interest to the whole crowd of Erato participants, and books of essays by Erato poets might also be of interest (they are to me, at least). I see that it might make the list more trim to have only books of poetry, but since I started out by being inclusive I say let's continue that way. It's always easier to trim back than it is to add in, just as in writing a poem.

Best, T

I have beside me a stack of books by Erato folks. But I can easily see how this excellent idea can turn into a swamp of odds and so be difficult to collate.

I suggest that we each email to or friends and colleagues and alert them to this thread so that those who so wish can take responsibility for their own records by posting.

It is possible that the writer's own list would differ from the well-meaning friend's list. For instance I have here two early chapbooks by Maryann, and since she didn't list them herself, I assume she has a reason (out of print, incorporated, other).

Whoa, this is quite a project, Tony! Thank you!

I have two chapbooks:

Reading Ruskin in Los Angeles (Finishing Line Press, 2009)

Licking the Serpent (Finishing Line Press, 2011)

You can find them both on Amazon, or order directly from Finishing Line.

I have a book-length manuscript that I've been circulating and re-working, but that might be a long time a-coming.

Charlotte
