Default New Statesman -- room to let winners

My apologies for being a couple of days late with these results. No health problems (thanks for your concern, Brian), but I have been on the road and off the computer for part of this past week.

No 4290
Set by Leonora Casement

We asked for advertisements in the “Room to Let” section of a publication or online site seeking a lodger for a house to be found in literature.

This week’s winners
Well done. We were particularly impressed with the number of entries. Hon menshes to Sylvia Fairley, Lois Heckmann, Chris O’Carroll and Rob Stuart. The winners get £25 each, the Tesco vouchers going, in addition,
to M E Ault.

Rustic, one-room dwelling available for short lets from now until end November. Built on ecologically friendly lines in an avant-garde architectural style, the accommodation benefits from the most basic of amenities. It is set in a quiet corner of the countryside, adjacent to a wood, with a friendly, helpful community nearby.
Would suit serious but unstuffy philosophical person who seeks a quiet place to work and wants to experience a return to the simple life. Must be able to endure long periods of solitude and must like thistles. Apply eeyoreesq@poohmail.com
M E Ault

Room to let in up-to-theminute, modern house. Would suit active, virile young man. Very reasonable rent but from time to time the tenant would be required to do battle with Roman insurgents. However, magic potion will be provided and a true hero’s welcome can be assured on return.
Apply (in person) to: Madame Geriatrix, the Gaulish Village, Armorica.
Chris Lovibond

Rent-free: capacious shoebox (size 10) excellently furnished with superior dolls’ furniture. Bed, chairs, table, chest of drawers, wardrobe and close-stool provided – absolutely FREE of charge. Owner will cosset tenant, who will be given access to royalty. She will expect in return minimal duties of an entertaining kind. Will suit spirited seafaring man or world traveller. Apply via the Palace to Glumdalclitch. (Please make your application in the largest handwriting of which you are capable.)
Gerard Benson

Room to let in quiet New England town. The widowed owner is seeking an educated gentleman as her tenant, perhaps a writer or a scholar. (Unattached gentlemen only, please – no lady visitors.) The only other occupant at present is the owner’s 12-year-old daughter, whom her mother describes as “well-behaved and discreet – I’m sure she will never disturb you”. For further details, contact Mrs Charlotte Haze, 342 Lawn Street, Ramsdale.

Egad! I got an honorable mention!!!

(At least I think Lois Heckmann is me, even though it has an extra n...)

Do they publish the runners up, too, or just mention the names? Forgive me, people, but this is a very exciting first for me!

Congrats to all the winners!

I'm afraid not, Lois. Our names in print is all we get. Congratulations on your first mention, though!
