This is completely true, Cameron, but I do think one suffering creature can represent other suffering creatures which are unnamed and unseen, and thereby make a chink in the wall of indifference we put around ourselves to live. Which seems worth doing. Hollywood is all about this question of representation: thus, Schindler's List is not Shoah, in its accounting for six million dead.
