Lots of very funny stuff here, but I got a particular kick out of Jerry's "grits" poem (and the way Jim rhymed tomato with con obligato and risked with bisque). But if this thread goes on any longer, it may be an anthology in the making. I'd be contributing a lot more myself but for the unhappy fact that "garlic" isn't a very good rhyme word. And my ode to my favorite fruit, the orange, is similarly stymied. Ah well.

Ahem...

I frolic
with garlic,
but it gives
babies colic.

(assume accent for above)

"starlick"? (use your imagination here)

There ya go Bob! Consider them a gift

One to leave out of the anthology:

Useless Remedy For Overcooked Hamburgers

If your burger should char, lick
a small clove of garlic.

Garlic

It’s called “Italian Rose”
and beckons to the nose,
its petals pungent cloves,
the attar of our stoves.

Mint anyone?

I am BITTERLY disappointed that my first-ever sonnet, a true masterpiece, garnered so little comment. Come ON, 'spherians: over 40 years of writing verse, a first sonnet, and this is the best you can do?

P.S.: if this post garners 10 responses, I will start a new competition to be endowed with another of my magnificent photographs....

"My Lover Was a Banquet Rare"

XXX
My lover was a banquet rare,
XXXIn tribute now, I here declare:

My true love’s lips of cherry red
XXXLit fire within my heart
It was from her my soul was fed
XXX’Tis hunger since we part.

My love had hair of butter gold
XXXSo, all will now attest…
It’s luscious glory to behold
XXXA’dripping o’er her breast.

Her saucy skin, tender and tight-
XXXDelicious, to be seen.
So, too, her smile of creamy white
XXXAnd eyes of soylent green.

- Bugsy

These words my granny used to mutter,
Hour on weary hour -
"My life" (said she) "Is nothing butter
Melon cauliflower."

(sorry!)
