I don't agree that basing subscription choices on the journals' need is wise. Ed's original question, asking people's opinions of journals' relative quality, is a better approach.

Ed's not alone in having trouble navigating the market. If there were fewer journals, subscribers and contributors would have an easier time finding the good ones. Let the mediocre small journals die and maybe the good small journals won't have to stay small.
