Ted Hughes also wrote outstanding animal poems. There is a collection of a number of them, titled "A Ted Hughes Bestiary," if you're interested.

Thanks, Hilary. I'm fairly familiar with his poems, including some nature ones, though I can't remember reading that particular collection right now. I have the complete Ted Hughes, so I must check that out soon when I get time.

Hey Trevor, I feel inspired to start checking more nature poems out now. Good luck with the collection.
here are my thoughts,
I liked the line-
“Between these dogs,
there is understanding
that each has a subtle role
moulded by its proven talent”
When hunting/ in war or just working in groups this highlights the unspoken communication that can happen and dynamics that spark. I also think this poem highlights the brutality of nature in that the beast was torn to pieces with no quick death
