The Empire of Japan declared war on the United States on December 7, 1941 after a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and the United States Congress declared war on the Japanese Empire the following day, as did the United Kingdom and a number of other countries.
On December 11, 1941, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States and America immediately responded by declaring war on those two countries.
One may speculate whether or not the United States would have entered the European war or not; the facts are that the country was forced into a state of war by the above events.
It was Britain who declared themselves an ally of the US in their war against Japan, before the US became an their ally in Europe.
