And what an essay it is! I swore, I raged, I howled, I laughed out loud. The neighbors must think I'm crazy.

The piece is erudite, wide-ranging, insightful, beautifully written. It weaves the diverse threads together into a lovely garment, stained with absinthe.

Of course, Dowson is one of my most secret, and sordid, passions:

The feet, that lately ran so fast
To meet desire, are smoothly sealed;
The eyes, that were so often cast
On vanity, are touched and healed

I myself would rate Dowson considerably higher than Katy does.
And I don't think his fondness for young girls was non-sexual: he was mortified when the 11 year old grew up and married someone else.

And before him, of course, Dodgson, Twain, and Ruskin (not to mention the curiously anomalous Little Nell and Little Dorritt). It's an odd phenomenon: Victorian Men of Letters and the Prepubescent Girl. I'm sure there's been scholarly work done on the subject, though nothing springs immediately to mind.

Well that's a brilliant piece which is typical of Katy's fertile creativity. I did want to argue with her a lot. I used to perform Arnold Schoeberg's setting of Stefan George's ,,das buch der hängenden gärten" and was deep into all that stuff. I can't really relate Schoenberg so much to Dowson although Katy will have read much more of him than I have. Stefan George was certainly imagistic.

It's nice to read music and poetry spoken of together without apology.

Katy, did you get carried away by Schoenberg as we all do when we tangle with him? He had almost more space that Dowson.

I see that Kandinsky was mentioned because I was wondering what had happened to the Russians who did some of those things before Picasso.

But what a heady and stimulating essay it is.
Katy, if you're reading this, I was vastly entertained and it made me think of so many things that I have valued. Thank you!
And thank you Jennifer for drawing our attention to the article.

I see that a great many Eratosphereans are published in this issue. I haven't had a chance to read them yet but well done all.
