Once I showed five different Othellos (one act each, which got a little dicey with Welles's order of things) and had the students do an annotated bibliography with comments on each performance:

Welles
Olivier
Fishburne
Marshall
Hopkins

I've since done the same with Hamlet, choosing from

Olivier
Branagh
Burton
Williamson
Gibson
Hawke

Usually works pretty well, with some overlaps.

These days I show one act apiece from four versions of Long Day's Journey into Night.

Good heavens, thanks so much, everyone, for this detailed advice! I knew I could count on the Sphere.

I'm about to run out to the video store right now, to see what I can rent. On the phone the man told me that they have several versions of each play, so I'll see what I can find! (And print this out to take with me!)

Thanks again to all.
Charlotte
