Sorry about blundering the name of Merrill's mother. No doubt that information can by found online in seconds, and besides that, I have the Collected with its biographical sketch at the back -- which I had certainly read before -- naming both his parents in the first sentence. No idea what happened there. Let's call it poetic licence.
I've enjoyed reading all the different reponses to the poem, including those that were not well disposed to it, and especially those by readers who evidently know Merrill's poetry much better than I. I might come back with more specific rejoinders, but just for now, thanks all round.
