Default Jack Gilbert: Triumph & Loss

Gilbert's "Collected Poems" is reviewed, but the article is as much about his life and fade:

"Intellectual weight, stark clarity and emotional incandescence" is right; an exemplary life of and in poetry. Thanks for posting this, it's a reminder that I need to get his Collected.

What a beautiful piece of writing. Thank you, Will.

The lump in my throat is unswallowable, the screen is blurry and I've just wiped the keyboard with my sleeve. But it is on the strength of the actual quotations that I will seek out the book, and meanwhile find Jack Gilbert where I can.

The Great Fires is a favorite of mine. I carry it around in my book bag most of the time. Along with Gerald Stern's American Sonnets.

This'll be the first book I buy once I get back to work. Savings are dwindling and my almost-year-long break is about over.

I read a few poems in the sample offered, and was blown away by "Myself Considered as the Monster in the Foreground".

Jack Gilbert just passed away, it seems. Very sad. I was inspired by "A Brief for the Defense."

Here's an obituary. Sad indeed.
