No, I think he got it from a packet of remaindered Christmas crackers.

So it may be that unlike me everyone else is familiar with Harry Graham's (writing as Col. D. Streamer) Perverted Proverbs, but for those who aren't, and who find themselves strangely unable to search the web, here's a link.

Default Better the Devil you Know

“Better the devil you know” – so they said.
Now I’m keen to do well, and I’m easily led,
so I found me a friend who had horns on her head.
She was darkly attractive and she looked good in red,
and when we made love, she set fire to the bed.

This went on for months, but then out of the blue
God sent me to hell – and for eternity too!
Turns out it’s a sin – yes really! Who knew?

“Better the devil you know?” – don’t be dense,
you should never know devils (in the biblical sense).

'You shouldn't throw stones
if you live in glass houses'
is a proverb no logical
person espouses,
for who would suggest
that a homeowner should
throw stones in a house
made of bricks or of wood?
If your house is a glass one,
but one thing is certain:
be sure every wall
has a suitable curtain.

A Devil’s in the Details?

Who says that a devil resides in the details
of smiling beguiling black-and-white texts,
his evil corrupting our docs and our e-mails—
dark lies that he hides in the fine-print details?
A truthful writer often prevails,
bans obvious biases from his texts,
evicting a resident devil from details
that smile and beguile in black-and-white texts.
