Times Book of the Month
Excuse a brief puff at my own trumpet. I'm very excited to say that the first review of my novel, Ascension, has appeared in The Times (UK) - and the reviewer has nominated it Book of the Month. I'm not sure whether you'll be able to get beyond the pay-wall but here's a link. And here's a snippet in any case:
Quote:
Dowling teaches American literature at a university in Venice. It shows. Ascension blends a laconic, amused style informed by American detective literature with a profound knowledge of Venetian geography and history. Stylish, clever and gripping.

Gregory,
As you know, I bought the book via my mobile phone while you sat beside me for lunch in London
I've read the first chapter and am now trying to reorganise my life so that I can pick up Ascension and not put it down again until I reach the end. OK, that isn't going to happen...(big sigh) How I wish I was about to go on holiday!
Suffice it to say that I just can't wait to get back to the story. Huge congratulations on the well-deserved Book of the Month nomination.

I can see the first few sentences at least, and they certainly read like a glowing review. Congratulations!

That's great, Gregory. And Venice is such a great setting for whodunits and whatnots. Congrats!

Thank you very much, everybody! As you can imagine I am extremely thrilled by this. I wasn't expecting to hear anything for weeks, since the official publication date was only last Thursday.
Andrew, it certainly does help having Venice on hand, so to speak, as a background. Difficult to go wrong there.
And Jayne, thanks again for buying it so promptly. Hope you find time - and hope you enjoy it!
And happy birthday, Janice, whenever that is!

Congratulations! It sounds great! (I guess "Death in Venice" was taken.)

Thanks, Bill. And, yes, that title was gone. A few years ago Geoff Dyer did do an interesting variation on it, with a novel entitled Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi.
