I walked through the John Singer Sargent exhibit currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, almost out of duty. My feeling about Sargent is that he could do just about anything, meanwhile not doing much of anything. Remarkable facility. But he never fails to leave me cold.

Though I'm not a visual artist, I think I see what you mean... The paintings are impressive, but are they anything beyond that? I do think the sketches are interesting, though. They feel more alive to me than the paintings.
