I don't agree that basing subscription choices on the journals' need is wise. Ed's original question, asking people's opinions of journals' relative quality, is a better approach.

Ed's not alone in having trouble navigating the market. If there were fewer journals, subscribers and contributors would have an easier time finding the good ones. Let the mediocre small journals die and maybe the good small journals won't have to stay small.

I recommend Candelabrum.
It's a formal Brit magazine with a soft spot for haiku and no web presence.
Very different from American formal mags. The editor likes simple and lyrical poems. I'd say about 20-25% hit the mark, which is good for a poetry mag.
It's on Rose's list.

Well, let's say a limited web presence, David!

I don't know the US mags, but in the UK I'd recommend The Dark Horse and Candelabrum. If I was coerced into naming a third it might be Orbis.

There used to be some approval around here for Anon among UK magazines. Was that only true when Mike Stocks was doing most of the selecting? (You can get a sense of Mike Stocks's taste from his comments on the Sonnet Bakeoff entrants in, I think, 2006.)

He appears not to be doing the main poetry-editor job now. What do we think of Anon at present?

Granted, I sent them a crappish submission in retrospect, but they didn't answer queries and took a year for a form reject. (Anon, that is.)

While I'm sorry to hear that, Quincy, it tells me little about the result of their way-too-slow editorial choices. Are there any current subscribers among us? Any readers? What do people think of the printed product now? There's a web site, but I can't find any sample poems, and the magazine is not listed at the Southbank Centre's Poetry Library site. So I'm asking what it's like now, and whether it's still form-friendly at all, and worth subscribing to for somebody who wants to read metrical work.

Maryann:

I've been subscribing rather liberally to the journals mentioned in this thread, but I too would like to know from current subscribers, what do people thnk?

Ed

P.S. I've found several poets I'm now keen on through the medium of little magazines, so I hope my enthusiasm is understandable.

Smartish Pace is definitely worth subscribing to. They're very eclectic and print a lot of strong work, formal and otherwise.

For me, the Dark Horse is a must. So is the Hudson.

I recently subscribed to The Southern Review and have not regretted it, and they could use the support these days (although who can't, really).

Default The North

To the very useful list of recommended print magazines maintained at the top of this thread, I'd like to add The North. It's full of fine poems written by poets who were new to me, and a few beauties by poets I do know and hold in esteem, like John Whitworth; a lot of reviews, too, of books I'd never heard about. It's among my favorite magazines.

Ed
