Thank you, Annie, Jesse, Nemo, Nic, Charlotte, Susan & Susan, Laura, Janice and everyone else. I guess it's classic case of it never rains but it pours this week, per the light note in Nemo's post.

Anyhow, there's no new update as to the culprit, and I may never find out -- due to our ever-increasing popularity and the consequently huge size of the server logs, it's becoming increasingly demanding/time-consuming to isolate aberrant patterns from the logs. The good news though is that I've been able to neutralize the intended attack and things are normal again!
