Well, it's too late for me to get a sex change and become an Eagle Scout, but I suppose I could still take up smoking. Thanks for the tip.

Seriously, though, I don't see how the immediate gratification of having friends in high places publish my work before it's fully polished could possibly outweigh the disadvantages of having poems in print that are less than my best effort.

Steve Bodio, my favorite outdoor writer, asked for a blurb for The Hounds of Heaven. Instead I sent him a dream poem of our tackling the high desert of New Mexico with his horses, hounds, and falcon. It will appear as the back jacket of the best dog book I've ever read. Given that Steve outsells me fifty to one, I'll reach a lot of readers.

This is all wonderful news. As a side note, I would love to read your poem on the Bardo Thodol. I have a friend who has promised to read it on my behalf if she outlives me.

Gail, I emailed Bardo Thodol. "To Stephen Bodio" will be the frontispiece of Hounds, not the back jacket. Thrilled to help out such a fine writer.

Writing "Patience" set me off on a jag of scouting/camping/climbing poems. I sent the four of them to Greg Williamson, and he has put them in his hold file. He has a big backlog and limited space in STR, but these won't appear in book form until 2018. Nice to hear from you, Charlotte.

Les Murray is publishing 3 of the 7 sections in my Holy Week sequence in Australia's Quadrant, including Holy Monday, which was workshopped here.
