I saw Anne Coulter on the Chris Matthews show the other day. Matthews quoted from her book in which she stated that the new enemy today is easier to spot than the enemies of days gone by, because you can smell the stink if they happen to sit next to you. Matthews asked her if this wasn't a racist crack about Arabs in general. Her answer, in full, was "Anything to help sell my book." Now there's a deep and principled thinker!
Of course, she claims that I myself am guilty of "treason" merely because I'm a Democrat. Apparently the two-party system is itself an example of institutionalized treason. More profound thinking. "Anything to sell a book."
She also said that Republicans who opposed the war are not guilty of "treason" --but that Democrats who opposed the war thereby committed treason. I kid you not! I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. Her explanation seems to be that if one holds several "wrong" views at one time, one is a traitor, but if one is only "wrong" from time to time, like the Republicans who opposed the war, one is merely a public-spirited citizen who went astray. Honest to God! That's what she said. Go look at the transcript if you don't believe me.
On the subject of Turner, it's interesting that he seems to hang out with the only people in America who are reluctant to admit that they supported the war. The polls show that most people supported the war, including most Democrats. The polls also show that most people are indifferent to the fact that GWB repeatedly lied to the American people about the imminence of the threat that Iraq posed to the world through its weapons program. (After all, why should we care? It's not like he lied about something important, like a blow job). The country is essentially pro war, for better or for worse, and it seems to me it takes far more courage to stand up and say you were against it. Isn't Howard Dean the only Democrat to take that position? Does it really take courage to wave an America flag in America? Then we are a truly nation with extraordinary courage, as any of the recently-enriched flag manufacturers can testify.
