I must say, I heartily approve of the posting of original poems on this thread.
Here is my point: the only way we get to share each other's work on this site is if the poem is offered for comment on one of the crit-boards, or appears in a mag we all read.
In the first case, we are reading the poem in a certain way - looking for problems and thinking about solutions, and this affects our reception of the poem. In the second case, as recent stats have shown, only a small percentage of what we write ends up in mags or books.
By feeling free to post the occasional and relevant poem in GT threads, as part of the conversation, we can all get to see work from each other which might never otherwise be seen. The poems that fall between the cracks.
Some might object that to expose poems in this way might be to risk their chances of future publication. But there is nothing to stop members from editing-out their poems from the thread after a few days, which mean that the poems would have even less exposure than on the crit-boards. All poems posted on a workshop site should be given this leeway.
Anyway, my day would have been a great deal less interesting without the above poems by Gail, Lee and Janet.

Just for information, Mark, how does one "edit out" things one has posted to a thread?
Another neat trick everyone seems to know but me is how to insert a "quote" from another entry.
I'd appreciate knowing how to do these things.
Thanks, all.

Gail, since the explanation may be of use to others, I will post rather than PM.
To edit one's post, simply click on the "edit" icon at the foot of each post, which takes you back to the composition window. Cut and paste whatever you wish, then re-submit the post, which will then appear as edited.
You can also edit-back into other posters posts, to see what codes they are using, etc, but you cannot change anyone's post except your own.
Which is just as well - imagine the chaos - "I don't recall saying that!"
To make a quote from someone's earlier post, simply highlight and "copy" the text, then paste it in your composition window between (QUOTE) and (/QUOTE) - only using square brackets [].

Gail,
To post a Quote (and it took me ages to find out), go to the message you wish to quote and click on "Quote" at the bottom next to "edit".
The message will appear in the window. Leave the word QUOTE and the preceding square bracket. Delete the parts of the message you don't want to quote. Leave the close/ Quote mark inside square brackets. I always delete the B because I hate the bossy bold appearance it gives to the quote.
The main piece of information is that instructions to Quote and to close/Quote must be enclosed in their own square brackets.
Look at this with quote or edit and you'll see the mechanics of the thing.
We can only edit our own posts. You simply open the message you posted and delete it. I usually leave something like "sorry" to show that I know I've messed up the thread.
If you want to correct or add something to one of your messages just click on Edit at the bottom and amend the post then repost.
Best,
Janet
(Edited back to say Mark has already explained beautifully.)

Thanks, friends. I never paid any attention to those little symbols before!
One more thing, as long as you're helping me -- how does one send a personal message? I didn't know this capacity existed until a few weeks ago - and then I found out I had messages going back 2 or 3 years!

Gail,
I had the same experience.
If you select your personal message box at the bottom of the Main Page you will see "member's list" at the top. If you want to PM me you select Members and click on J. The letters are numbered so that you progress alphabetically. Sylvia would be near the end of S etc.
You select "send so and so a message and the form appears on your screen. If ypu receive a message and want to reply you select "reply".
It's very easy.
I'll send you a message as an illustration.
Janet

Some easier ways to send a personal message to a specific person:
Reply to one you got from that person, emptying the message box and changing the subject line
When the person's name appears on the main page, as the most recent poster, click on the name. The person's profile will come up. In the profile, click on the "send a private message" line.
When the person has posted a comment on your poem, or any poem, look in the line just below the post. It contains several icons, for profile, private message, edit, and I forget the fourth one. Click on the PM icon. You could also click the profile icon and then click the private message line.
This board has so many functions that it amazes me. That they continue to work most of the time is even more amazing!
(A big thank-you to Alex here.)
Should we start a thread on little-known board functions? Or revive an old one?
