FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska -Sarah Palin says she didn't blink when John McCain asked her to be his running mate. In an interview Thursday with ABC News' Charlie Gibson, the 44-year-old Palin was asked if she felt ready to step in as vice president — or perhaps even president if something happened to the 72-year-old McCain.
Palin says she has confidence in her readiness: "You can't blink. You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on. ... So I didn't blink then, even when asked to run as his running mate."
ABC News posted the interview online.

Wow, she took less than a minute to ponder her ability to lead a superpower nation.

Who pays for the rape kit, the collection of evidence and the resultant forensics in your town?
Laura - Actually, I'm not sure.

We carry the kits in our cruisers, and they are issued to us by the PD. I'm sure they come out of the city budget, but throught the police or fire department (EMTs), I'm not sure. Our departments work closely together, and with our hospital. The hospital often replenishes supplies in out ambulances and we reimburse them later.

The hospital calls in a SANE nurse to do the examination, and I would assume her services are paid for by the patient or insurance. The city pays for services we legally request, but we can't force a person to undergo a SANE examination. If they are uninsured and cannot pay, the hospital probably absorbs the cost.

Same for the lab fees: in most investigations in which we can order a service, the city pays. I assume the lab fees are handled in the same way the nurse's fee is.

If you really need to know, I can double-check tomorrow and give you a definitive answer.

Don't you think she had some foreknowledge she was on the shortlist, and had time to consider what she would say if she were asked?

In the majority of cities there is a Victim's Assistance Program which pays the cost. Should there not be a V.A.P. available, the city generally absorbs the cost. Not everywhere, of course, but almost everywhere.

Wasilla was not of those "not everywhere" cities. In fact, Wasilla was the last remaining town in Alaska to charge the victim for the exam, the kit and the forensics.

After numerous complaints were filed the state legislation was forced to pass a law requiring Wasilla to stop charging the victim to process the crime evidence. Charlie Fannon, Police Chief of Wasilla, appointed to his position by Palin after her dismissal of the previous police chief, protested the law, saying that it would cost Wasilla $5,000 to $14,000 a year if the city had to foot the bill for rape exams.

Just think if Palin had been governor at the time, huh?

I don't know, but you'd think so, you'd hope so?? Then when I read this oddly phrased sentence:

Palin says she has confidence in her readiness: "You can't blink. You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on. ... So I didn't blink then, even when asked to run as his running mate."

it seems state that she never blinked, while committed to THE mission (? what ever that is) or THEIR mission, or EVEN when asked to be (McCains) running mate. Otherwise wouldn't she have said she weighed the decision. Discussed with her family etc.

I haven't read the full interview, I will though--I'm going by what I'm reading here.

I do find her "run as his running mate" pretty funny, don't you.

I don't like her repeated use of the the word "mission" at all. How about vision, goal, ideal, dream. Mission has too many negative conotations.

Au contraire my friend, he would be very lucky if that was on his tombstone. The Meyer Tombstone Company has one already made that says, "Read my lips. We didn't sell missiles to Iran."

I can not blink.
You can not blink.
We can not blink.
Blinking is for humans.
We are not humans.
We are robots.
We were not born.
We were wired.
All robots are wired.
Humans are not wired.
Humans blink.
We can not blink.
We are robots.
We have a mission.
All robots have a mission.
The mission is to not blink.
Robots do not blink.
Mission accomplished.

Amazing how a thread on Ohio's response to Obama has - again - turned into an anti-Palin argument.

With all the potshots y'all are taking, you ought to join the NRA. *grin* (Sorry Donna).

You are taking an emotionally charged topic - rape - and using it to making Palin sound like a heartless person. *sigh*.

Wasn't exactly an unbiased article, was it? One of the reasons I didn't pursue journalism as a career after college was I felt journalism had devolved from "reporting the facts" to "interpreting and using the the facts for our own purposes". Oh well - that's for a different thread.

I turn this over to those who want to discredit Palin some more.

Think if I start a thread on Ouji boards we might avoid discussing Palin?

Jerry, it's a "Ouija" board. I can remember the spelling because it's "oui" (French for "yes") plus "ja" (German for "yes"). So it's really a "yes-yes" board, it tells you what you want to hear. Kind of like TV.
