Those sources which describe the form as being described by Hecht and Pascal in 1961 definitely state that as a requirement. Example:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_dactyl Mary

I deleted my earlier message in which I argued with Mary about her point because I've come to accept it, and I posted a new version of the dd in #17, below, which replaces the one with the shabby/Abbey rhyme. Thanks, Mary.

Don't know much about dactility,
Got no time to read all those words.
Here's what I thought of when I read
Rogero Slater's. Might be for the birds.

Hoitily, toitily,
Catherine Middleton,
Duchess of Cambridge,
Reportedly said,

"Wasn't it shabby
In Westminster Abbey
To find paparazzi
Where I would be wed."

Allen, I thought shabby/Abbey would be a fun rhyme for the two stanzas. There are many different ways to go if it turns out not to be kosher to have a feminine rhyme there, but your solution, I'm afraid, messes up the meter throughout. Your last three lines don't even start with dactyls, and your lines 3 and 6 don't end with dactyls.

If we were her, would we,
Hyperempathically,
Feel life was ruined and
It was the Pitts?

OK, Mary, how about this one? (Does "aisle" pass as two syllable to Brits?)

Hoitily, toitily,
Catherine Middleton
Married Prince William in
Westminster Ab'

Sporting an outfit so
Aristocratically,
Even Diana would
Say it looked fab.

Last edited by Roger Slater; 11-15-2011 at 07:41 AM. Reason: changed L3 to remove "aisle"

Ringeldy- Pingeldy
Engelbert Humperdinck
Knew how to sing songs as
Arthur George Dorsey

He changed that name un-
Paranomasial,
My guess is he found it
Sounded too horsey.

Susan, if Mary is correct about what she told me, and I now believe she was, then your Dorsey/horsey rhyme is impermissible. And L7 doesn't start with a beat, near as I can tell.
