I think you should go ahead and write the book Graham.
Little Women in the Striped Pyjamas
The four March sisters and the mysterious Marmee inhabit a female commune in a small town in New England, a house that is viewed with much mistrust, fear and loathing by the local community. Rumours of wanton good-naturedness, puppies and wild nights of bread-making keep people away until the son of the local police chief befriends the youngest March girl, Amy. They converse over the white picket fence and a strange friendship ensues, unbeknownst to his parents, who have warned him repeatedly about the commune’s inhabitants. Things come to a head when the boy disappears and the police chief organises a raid on the house, after the boy’s muddy shoes are spied on the doorstep. But it is too late, as they discover him in a pinafore arranging flowers in a vase in the kitchen while Beth plays the piano in another room.
