Letters from Lapland and postcards from Pisa,
Cheerful round-robins from some daft old geezer,
Stamps with the heads of obscure Balkan Kings –
These were a few of my favourite things.
Cheques on my birthday from Great-Uncle Charlie,
Holiday greetings and photos from Bali,
Parcels with sealing-wax, ribbons and strings –
These were some more of my favourite things.
Sometimes, a package marked carefully ‘Fragile’
Had served as a football for someone quite agile;
Picking it up produced worrying ‘glings’.
“Well”, I would say, “It’s just one of those things.”
But threatening letters and final reminders,
Light-fingered postmen – those keepers and finders -
These were the things that I hated the most,
So I bid an untearful farewell to the Post.
