Julie, I agree that she is asleep while he is awake. I just thought that he calls it a lullaby because he started whispering as she was falling asleep and the white noise of his whispers helped to lull her to sleep. But once she is fully asleep, he probably is not going to whisper all night. He says he is closing her and leaving her alone with what is hers. So whether he actually leaves the room or not, there is a sense that he is withdrawing from her after closing her with his words.

True, he's probably not going to whisper all night, but she's probably not going to be an insomniac forever after he's lost her, either, however much he might flatter himself to think so. The whole poem is silly romantic hyperbole, so if we poke pragmatic holes in one bit, the whole bubble bursts.

Isn't romance hyperbolic in its very nature? The bubble always bursts, giving way to either a more realistic love or disappointment.
