Glenn is right about the close reading done with what is arguably the most famous poem written by an American: "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening". At one point the moderator took a question from someone in attendance. The question was (I'm paraphrasing) "I teach poetry to inmates at a medium security prison for men. When I introduced Frost's poem to them and we talked about the poem for awhile I asked the guys what the "woods" meant in their lives. Almost to a man, they said 'The streets at 4am.'" It blew me away.
