What? Is there a question about what the ladies are singing? Clearly, it's

Mares eat oats and does eat oats
And little lambs eat ivy
A kid'll eat ivy too
wouldn't You?

I'd eat AT the Ivy.

Ralph,
No, I didn't mean that I didn't understand "mares eat oats..." etc. It's a classic from my childhood.

I simply couldn't fathom Duncan's poem until Bob clarified what was going on!

Well, sorry if I confused matters further for a while. There used to be a quiz show called "Catchphrase" where the way to win was "say what you see" with picture clues along the lines of Duncan's words.

I seem to remember Sam posting one of these a while back, the extra joke being that it was phonetically written Deep South dialect, as I (possibly mis-) recall.

My problem now is that, even with the words explained, I haven't got the foggiest what Duncan's on about.

On a steep incline you crane
your necks to see the skies.

Is the "you" another person (or persons) or a notional "one"; because in that situation we do, we do...?

I scream. Do you see this Dane?

What Dane? Is it a large, threatening dog, pehaps? or a lone Scandinavian skier, hurtling down the slope towards "her" If N is screaming, it must be something pretty terrible - worse, anyway, than a mediocre performance of Hamlet.

My screaming caught her eyes.

That's just odd. Is she deaf? Was he gesticulating, too? Or did it draw her eyes to the apocalyptic Dane?

I am still confused because this doesn't give me the "Oh, silly me!" moment when one realises what the words may become. I have them, but I'm still confused. Perhaps I am seeking solace in the surreal, which has none to offer.

For now, I'm going back to Himazaz. (Him as 'as the pub next door.)

Ann

The gist of it is this. In a sticky situation most people expend their energy on trying to get their bearings. I don’t do that. I scream. And it was thus that I enlisted the help of a Danish woman, who has stuck around ever since.

Duncan

PS Her name is Ann.

Can't quite decipher that, Ann. Errors (?) had a truth all along ?

I've extended the title to include the alternative reading so the reader has some sort of a chance.
