New Statesman -- Eric Cantona
John Whitworth and Bill Greenwell each have two winning clerihews this week; Basil Ransome-Davies and I each have one.
Anybody who understands this new competition is a lap ahead of me.

After announcing in Libération that he was running for the French presidency, (to represent “the millions of families who have been forgotten”), Eric Cantona said it was merely a ruse to draw attention to a lack of housing for the poor. What a shame! Let’s encourage him to rethink his decision by sending in an extract from his manifesto.

Reason: As Jayne noted, I left somebody out. Mea culpa.

Lack of housing - overcrowding - sardines...
Well done all you clever Clerihew winners - go for the top twenty next year!

Congratulations on the clerihews and other recent successes, Chris.
With Eric Cantona stand by for a lot of stuff about seagulls following sardine-boats. E.C. was, long, ago, a Man Utd player. I trust that clarifies things for you.

Thanks, Ann and Jerome. After posting the competition information, I did a bit of Cantona research, so I now see some real possibilities in that manifesto. (And thank goodness American athletes never have impulse control issues like Cantona's.)

Chris, John and Bazza,
Many congratulations to all of you on your clerihew successes! Just going over to the other thread to read them
(Just popped back to say that Bill's there, too. Congrats, Bill.)

Le Bateau Ivre
Les bateaux de pecheurs suiver
Les oiseaux de la mer
Ou arsy-versy as you say.
My meaning c'est tres clair.
Tres clair, tres clair de tout-le-monde.
Sardines, ou cod, ou tench,
Ou human beings. Si profond
Parce que je bloody French!
Mon nom c'est Eric Cantona
J'ai jouer au football,
Mais maintenant un rising star
Du monde political.
Je represent les interests
De tout familles hardworkin.
Self-confident et self-obsessed,
J'ai sang-froid comme un gherkin.
