My First Villanelle

John Ridland was born in London and grew up in the Flintridge hills
in Southern California. He attended Swarthmore College, UC Berkeley,
and Claremont Graduate School, and spent two years in the U. S. Army
in Puerto Rico. He has taught literature and writing at the University
of California, Santa Barbara, since 1961, with visiting stints at the
Universities of Colorado and Melbourne. From 1966-1972 he edited The
Little Square Review. His latest titles are John the Valiant,
a translation of a Hungarian folk-epic poem (Corvina Press, Budapest,
1999), Life with Unkie (Mille Grazie Press, Santa Barbara, 1999),
a companion piece to his earlier Elegy for My Aunt, and (Un)Extinguished
Lamp (Santa Barbara, 2000). He is preparing a volume of New and
Selected Poems, 1956-2000.
