Beside Bodega Bay School, Tippi sits,
Her back against the open silhouette
Of monkey bars and jungle gym. Her wits
Are all about her as she smokes and waits
The children out, her playgirl’s cigarette
Censing the schoolyard air in wispy plaits.
Behind, the birds come one-by-one, then more
Than one, then all at once before their wings
Make air abundantly not there; before
The harmless song the single schoolroom sings
Is done. Then, Tippi and the teacher talk
The children out in single file. They walk
Into a world that squawks, without a sun.
Then, fast as all of them can run, they run.
