(“Zoots,” a franchise chain)

Spaced out in their plastic wrap, they hang,
Skirts wide apart, pants smothered, breathless, waiting.
How long since this place opened with a bang?
A week ago? Ten days? Rapidly dating,
Whole yards from one another, cleaned and pressed
To answer claims, a few ensembles stand.
Hooked on their carousel, they occupy
The window: linens clean for backs of thieves?
Unlikely here in Newton-Wellesley land.
Work-casual khakis for the dot-com-dressed
A better take. But will this franchise die
Or live? Who knows, at this un-gala Zoots,
Where forlorn collars wilt and un-starched sleeves
Fall still. Two clerks stare out, dreaming of suits.
