A bit 'nip and tuck' - still a few hours till the deadline for this one, but I couldn't think of anything previously. Finally came up with D.H. Lawrence and his Snake. Not being a huge fan of FV, I do love his poem, though.

DHL: I always hoped I’d see you here again.

The Snake: I come here mossstly when you’re not around.
You misssed me with that log; it hit the ground;
a petty gesssture – typical of men.

DHL: I had no wish to harm you; it was fear.
I’m truly sorry, and you’re right to scoff,
but now we meet once more, beside the trough,
please be assured: I’m honoured that you’re here.

The Snake: But if I ssstrike, this conversssation ends!

DHL: I am aware of that, yet I shall stay
because I need to show you, since that day,
I’ve learnt humility. We can’t be friends,
but why should we be enemies? No need.

The Snake: We’re both afraid, though I’m inclined to kill,
but, on reflection, I don’t think I will,
- sssince you have ssshown me sssuch ressspect. Indeed!

I had this nicely spaced with 'tabs' but they didn't come out on the post. Never mind; it looked better when I sent it to Lucy.

Melville, in my lucid moments
I want to end this quest. I’m sick and
tired of this damned obsession.
Enough! Besides, I’m no spring chicken.

Ahab, you must seek the whale,
though he should lead you through hell’s portal;
For if you leave your quest, you lose
your chance (and mine) to be immortal.

Melville, can’t I hope to spend
my twilight years in old Nantucket?
Ahab, if you’d have me change
your destiny, you can just go forget it!*

sorry!*

--'Mary had a little lamb . . .'
--No, I didn't, Mother Goose.
--Shut up! Mother-Goose-I-Am.
--Would that you were Dr. Seuss.
--'Mary had a little lamb . . .'
--I give up. It's just no use.
--'Mary had a little lamb . . .'
--And I served it herbed au jus.

We would all prefer that somebody bit D.H. Lawrence, on the bum for preference because it might stop him talking so constantly out of it. Nice work, Jayne.
