I like this quite a lot; there have been many interesting comments
already, but what I noted, and found slightly perplexing is the
juxtaposition of "leapt ahead" (I know it means in the space race),
which sounds like praise, and then the next two lines contradict
that premise. Perhaps some sense of fear on the father's part
could be expressed before the phrase "leapt ahead".

Still, despite some of the shortcomings that others have noted,
I like it.

This one "takes me there". I like the repetition of "that moves" in L5 and the suggestion of "Cold War" in L12. It's a pity that line is missing a beat. But the 2011 Nemerov winner had an extra foot in L7.

Im into family poems so like this a lot -- with some possible tweaks...

Normally I'd avoid exclamations but I think this reallycalls for one--at age five you would be awed by this , e.g.

that moves. That moves! It's 1957.

I'd also delete the word Russians--not needed as we know who put the sputnik up
and that might help with the bread line

My father says that they have leapt ahead.
By building missiles, not by baking bread
the godless souls have marred the face of heaven.

“Reds” for “Russians”? Or is the assonance too much?
I would favour “faith and unbelief,” L10.
No need to look for any deeper meaning in this to enjoy it for what it is: a simple salute to an epic, albeit disturbing event etched on a child’s mind. Another favourite. I need more votes available.
