To benefit Able Muse, I'm rising to this challenge:
There once was a light versican
who likened himself to a pelican
His tense was terse,
His verse was worse.
"You can't write well, or scan." He replied, "The hell-I-can!"
(You are aware, I take it, that as a Mod I can edit your post... and add several zeros?
You might end up spending $20,000 here, Vernon! Hey, Alex is gonna love you! )

Hi Vernon,
I'm just going to have another ten bucks' worth. It's bedtime here now, you'll be relieved to hear. (I'm not trying to bankrupt you, honestly.)
There once was a light versican
who likened himself to a pelican
His tense was terse,
His verse was worse.
"Can 'e make people smile, though? You bet 'e can!"
(This is the easiest dosh I ever made, Alex. Heehee.)
You're a good sport for doing this, Vernon, especially as funds are really needed right now!

Hi Vernon,
I simply cannot resist.
There once was a light versican
who likened himself to a pelican
His tense was terse,
His verse was worse.
But then, after all, he was Corsican.
And as they say in Corsica... Goodbye!
Regards,
Devlin

I couldn't resist tweaking the other lines to adjust the meter. If this disqualifies me, so be it!
There once was a low-life light versican
who likened himself to a pelican
His meter was terse,
The verse was much worse.
The Brits all proclaimed him American
He was chastized and scorned by the Vatican
Of course he became a Republican
He got by on sausage and pemmican

Michael,
No harm, no foul! Instant replay shows the two point conversion was good!
Best,
Bill

There once was a light versican
who likened himself to a pelican
His tense was terse,
His verse was worse,
And he gushed his gas by the jerrycan.

thanks
Jayne
I count 9 winners so far. What do you think? Should Michael get a bonus for going above and beyond? That would make 10 so far if so. And I will throw in something for the judge so we're up to $110.00 which I'll send on Wednesday. I am so glad these brave poets have responded for the sake of the Muse. There is still time as I haven't set a deadline. I know it's just a drop in a puddle but I hope it will help.

There once was a woeful light versican
in love with a muse on the Helican,
but his verses were bad,
unspeakably sad,
and she turned him into a pelican.
