Jayne, I believe that some Americans have the quaint habit of rolling their "R's", as though they were Frenchmen, or some other foreign breed.

I believe Ralph was referring to the Americans' pronunciation of the name of the actual mathematician - "Fibba Natchie".

Ah, thanks for the enlightenment, Brian and Annie.

I've always pronounced it like this but my husband says it more like the US "natchie"; he reckons it's somewhere in between "atchi" and "archi", so we're all correct... sort of!
